Though the story does have a dark tone, after all it is a fantasy, it carries many positive messages. Iris is one of those stories that families can enjoy reading together to discuss the issues and themes featured in the novel.
Without giving away spoilers, ere are some of the most prominent lessons based on quotes from the book:
1. "You are stronger than your fears."
The main character, Anika, learns that bravery is not the absence of fear. Bravery means facing your fears and doing something even if you are scared.
2. "A sacrifice is a gift where both the giver and receiver are happy in the end."
The theme of sacrifice is weaved through out the story. Anika must ask herself if she is ready to make the ultimate sacrifice despite the consequences to herself.
3. "We all have different roles in this quest."
Anika learns that everyone has value. Though not all roles are glamorous, people contribute to society in different and useful ways.
4. "You never leave friends behind."
Friendships are an important part of what makes us who we are. The bonds of friendship are not easy to break.
5. "Your body will give out long before your heart does."
Strength of the spirit presides over physical strength. Anika encounters this lesson through out the story.
The Iris of Issoria weaves these threads into the fabric of a story that promotes feminism and diversity without being preachy. Be sure to check out my book when it becomes available to share it with the children in your life.
